Spring Forward

As I prepare to adjust my microwave and stove clocks to the new time (its an art to sync the change exactly right!) I am reminded that protecting the immune system must continue-- no matter the season.  Detoxification, eliminating dairy and grain products (which include gluten and yeast), eliminating sugar, and enhancing the diet with nutrient dense foods is the key. Under the guidance of an Integrative Medicine Specialist, consider adding appropriate bioavailable supplements, including herbal and food-based, to achieve optimum immune system health and well being. Those prone to Spring and seasonal allergies--get ready!  Your immune system needs special care.  Drop by the office for consultation and treatment.

Natural Farming by Rob

What a great treat to meet Farmer Rob of Marsh Havens Farms, at Lori Buda's Food Club!  Rob is a natural foods farmer with a background in organic farming certification.  Last evening we were treated to a presentation on the benefits and challenges of natural farming preceeded by a potluck of organic and naturally prepared dishes.  Farmer Rob introduced me to   I am hoping to have Farmer Rob speak at future events!

Healthy Food Class

On June 26 we hosted our first Healthy Cooking class featuring Raw Foods Chef Charma Dombreh!  The room was packed with eager participants fully engaged in hands-on meal preparation!  Our class was such a success, we are looking for a bigger venue!  In the meantime, contact our office/email for future class times/locations.

Community Health-The Food Club

Just recently I have discovered a group of neighbors in Davison, Michigan, getting together on alternate Saturdays, sharing tips on healthy cooking and food preparation! Lori (The Wren Network) invites us to her kitchen to make chemical free meals, snacks, and MSG-free seasonings.  She encourages everyone to hook up with local farmers...Lori has invited me and my patients to join in the discussion! Look for Lori on her facebook page and come meet with us!

Allergies: The 'Rodney Dangerfield' of Medicine

Allergies...they simply "don't get no respect"...recalling the famous words of comedian Rodney Dangerfield.  Ranging from mere annoyances of chronic post nasal drip, to palpitations and shortness of breath, allergic and hypersensitivity reactions can have a significant impact on one's quality of life.   While many are aware of  conventional" allergies, exposures to sick building syndrome, as well as environmental and chemical exposures continue to go unnoticed or ignored.

Mental Health

Last month in September, 2013, I had the priviledge of attending the 4th annual IMMH (Integrative Medicine For Mental Health) meeting in Chicago.  While the emphasis was on pediatric issues  most of the lectures were applicable to adult primary care practice.  A great deal of discussion surounded the issues of autism and ADHD.   It was wonderful to meet so many other practitioners from this area!.

Herbal Medicine

Herbal Retreat-"The Fire WIthin" July 26-27
Following completion in June of the four sessions on Seasonal Therapeutics conducted by Dr T. Lowdog, I was granted a gift!  A special gift...a two day session on her 185 acre home in the moutains of Pecos, New Mexico!  On her property is a one room school house, complete with wood burning fire place, 20 desks, and a small kitchen for preparing and storing herbal remedies.  112 different plants had been identified on her property, Dr. Lowdog informed us.   But before we proceeded, Dr. Lowdog performed a native american ritual, for each of us.   "This is sacred ground" she stated.  Then off we went (myself, rather unsteadily on the rocky terrain!) searching and identifying plants for a variety of medicinal uses.   It was a particularly spiritual experience for me; forever reminded of my Creek-native american heritage. What a blessing to have such a remarkable and inspiring teacher as Dr. Lowdog!   I will forever be grateful for her teachings and guidance.

Essential Oils

I'm aware many of you are using essential oils.  The utilization of essential oils has many benefits, including aromatherapy (with or without use of a diffuser), and Im encouraged by the results I'm observing.  My training in chronobiology emphasizes the use of natural and pure substances and their seasonal benefits in health maintenance and promotion.  I invite anyone to share their experiences (and hope to see you at upcoming Flint events with Shannon Hudson).

Seasonal Therapeutics

On March 16, 2013  I completed the third session of what is a four part series of lectures entitled "Seasonal Therapeutics", conducted by Dr. T. Lowdog.  Dr. Lowdog is a family practice physician and head of Dr. Andrew Weil's Integrative Medicine Fellowship Program in Arizona.  The lectures incorporate the concept of 'chronobiology"; how we should adapt and modify our integrative medical treatments to the changes of the season. This March "Spring" session emphasized a holistic approach to allergies (my favorite area of medicine) sighting the usefulness of herbal preparations and essential oils.  But as we all know, Spring has been fairly elusive in the Western Hemisphere this year..with the exception of the fresh cut tulips on our tables, it was a challenge to envision that the change of season is upon us!  So THINK SPRING! And prepare for the renewal of the spirit, through mind and body.

Alternative Health Fair

It was great to reconnect again with the Essential Oils folks this past weekend Nov 9-10 at the Alternative Health Fair in Flint MI!  Hope the materials and information I disseminated will be useful!  I have ordered a BioMat for stress treatment in my office and look forward to incorporating a diffuser in my practice.
